65th Anniversary of Iwo Jima Flag Raising

On this, the 65th anniversary of the Iwo Jima flag raising I see nothing mentioned online. No one sent an email, no one noted it in any blog I subscribe to, no one spoke of it in a phone call and no one has mentioned it at the Olympics. The event that generated the most famous photograph of not only WWII but the 20th century, re-energized America’s spirit towards the end of the war and gave birth to scores of movies, seems almost forgotten by the great majority of Americans born after the raising. I can guarantee you that the men of the Nashville, while perhaps not all specifically remembering the date, no doubt recall the event. Keep in mind, some of the crew of the Nashville, like on most navy ships, were Marines, such as Sgt. Don Hill. Besides his Nashville experience, Don saw more than his share of duty on bloody Pacific islands, fighting like the Marine he was and will always be. So to Don and the rest of the Marines and sailors of the Nashville, we thank you on this historic date.
